As with most relationships of boss to employee, there is some ambivalence to the relationship between John Hobbes and his boss.

As he writhes on the ground, he tells us that he is a highly decorated policeman who caught a vicious murderer, Edgar Reese. I think maybe the title came across as a bit generic, which the film is anything but. Thestory develops along the lines of a police procedural, with the copsinvestigating some strange murders, including a corpse left in a bathtub whilethe killer apparently enjoyed a leisurely breakfast. In the course of the investigation, Hobbes meets theology professor Gretta Milano Embeth Davidtz , who introduces him to the world of the occult and the possibility that an evil spirit is behind the killings. At first Hobbs rejects this theological information, but following the clues, he is led to several occult books by one of the fathers of 20th Century occultism, Gerard Manley Hall. The resolution scenes do pose an impact for me and reward my investment of time in the film.
Eventually, Hobbs thinks he has found out the secret to destroy Azazel, but a fallen angel who has been around for thousands of years is not so easily annihilated. So Azazel eventually finds himself a human host and begins another murder trail, confusing detectives by killing someone and leaving his hosts fingerprints and other evidence, then switching bodies and killing his previous host. As the teacher, Azazel draws a gun and forces Hobbes to shoot his host in front of a group of bystanders. But the loss of his parents looms large he mentions it several times , and it's the kind of situation that might scare younger viewers. Hobbes soon learns that Azazel is an evil spirit who can transfer itself from one person to another through touch. It was done in such a way where you can see Azazel's spirit go from person to person simply by following the camera up and down the crowd and watching the subtle touches one makes in a normal walk about town. Overall, my film rating is 3. Azazel is able to transfer himself from human to human simply by touching them, in most cases. After maybe a half dozen viewings of the film, I do tend to see see the foreshadowing and turns much more clearly than I did the first time. When Hobbes is forced to kill a man possessed by Azazel, he must clear his name while protecting his family and others from the evil, vengeful Azazel. Among the characters Hobbes encounters on his search for missing threads, themost interesting is the daughter of a cop who committedsuicide after being accused of the kinds of offenses that Hobbes himself nowseems to face. Hobbes realises that Azazel, while possessing Edgar Reese, touched Hobbes before the execution, but was not able to possess him. They have a private chat where Reese gives him a riddle of sorts and then speaks in a strange language.
