Set on the sportiest setting, however, the ride becomes brittle, although directional changes are quick and deliberate and body roll is quashed. Yet certain features are optional, some unique to the M6. It's no wonder M engines produce amazing amounts of horsepower and torque. There is also a recirculating pump that picks up oil from the small front oil sump and transfers it back to the main sump. But the actual footprint is wider.
But thanks to the miracles of electronics, such power has now become a proposition for the street. First of all, entrance will require even average height passengers to duck, and secondly, they will have to keep their heads down as the roofline cuts in drastically. Although the traction-control function is also there to prevent it, this reduces the chance of even transitory wheelspin. What could be better, right? This car is nothin short of excellent. The doors are automatically unlocked; interior lighting and 4-way hazard flashers are switched on. This mechanism accomplishes finely calibrated action by entirely natural means. The P400 performance programme is automatically activated as soon as the engine is started and as its name indicates offers immediate output of 400 bhp output. We still don't get it. But in detail, these engines are virtually hand-built by specialty divisions, the highest art produced by the most sophisticated engineering departments of their respective manufacturers.
Above all however the M6 Cabrio is one of the most fascinating and most exclusive vehicles, which were ever built. When the hardtop is put away in the trunk, a push of a button tilts the whole folded apparatus just enough to allow access to the luggage tub. It plays such a ripplingly beautiful song up to its 8250-rpm redline that you find yourself running up and down through the gears just to hear it one more time. These are power numbers that only a few short years ago would have seemed appropriate only for a racing car, and indeed a number of international racing series for sports cars restrict engine output to far less. Just tap the shift paddle, squeeze the gas, and you're gone, the M6 not even breaking into full stride. Individual throttle butterflies on each cylinder with full electronic control give the V10 yet another highlight from its motor racing heritage. This could explain why, even with the sequential gearbox on its quickest setting and the power button activated more on that later , it seemed more difficult to get the M6 convertible's sticky 285mm-wide rear tires to chirp as easily on takeoff and even during first-to-second gearchanges as it does in the 300-pound-lighter M5 to say nothing of the featherweight M6.
The feel of the pedal is nearly as good as it gets: nicely weighted and easy to modulate. The changes that have been made for the M6 2015 model all seem to aim at making it lighter. The front calipers have dual pistons, another M6 upgrade; front and rear calipers — highly visible through the wheels — are finished in glossy black. The integrated restraint systems on the front seats also feature belt latch tensioners, with two-stage frontal and side airbags reducing the risk of injury. Which, if you consider its likely window sticker, probably confirms that this sexy beast is a go. Though the front seats in the M6 are more bolstered than expected in a standard 6-series, they are multi-adjustable and comfortable and cannot be termed as confining. Instead, the crankshaft incorporates two large counterweights. We're still no fans of iDrive, but at least the M6's pivoting display didn't get washed out in the sunlight as with so many such systems on other cars. The new M6 Convertible is no exception.
The very motion to be controlled — differences in speed between one wheel and the other — generates its locking action. The engine note is sporty but subdued, in part because the transmission quickly shifts the box into the tall seventh gear unless you're calling the shots. Under dry to not-quite-dry road conditions, the traditional 25% limited-slip has some ability to improve traction; but under split-traction conditions one wheel on slippery, the other on firmer ground it cannot transmit more torque than the slippery side permits. We'll deliver a full instrumented test as soon as possible. There's an exotic, highly tuned quality to the exhaust note--you're forgiven if twisting the key for the first time makes you look over your shoulder for a pit man with a starter. It's an experience that seems to challenge the laws of physics.
